Something to fight for

I just finished my first peice of real terrain so I wanted to show off some pictures and go over how I created it.

I'm very proud of it.
The model is an Imperial Manufactorium from Games Workshop.  Not terribly original but I needed something to hit the ground running with.  Also, considering most of the terrain my group is using is unpainted craters and stone walls not even from Warhammer 40k this thing stands out.

Imperial buildings, built to last!
I started out putting the model together exactly as shown on the box (well, to the best of my abilities) and glued it to a clipboard that I had cut to shape.  After drying I took some wood glue and covered the board with coarse sand.
The effects I attempted were easy and worked really well!
After the sand dried I cut some left over pieces and placed them around the ground trying to make sure they didn't get in the way.  I glued these and some more sand down.  The entire thing was then primed Chaos Black.  The ground was painted Dark Flesh followed by Bestial Brown and Snakebite Leather with a small dry brushing of Bleached Bone.

The building was painted Charadon Granite with some light brushing of Dheneb Stone with some Hammered Copper (Game Color paint) brushing in a downward motion.  Finally I lightly dry brushed the skulls Bleached Bone and threw some Badab Black wash in some of the details.  The entire model was then sprayed with Army Painter Anti-Shine to protect it.

So, what do you think?  Is this a good start?  What did I do well and what needs improvement.  And most importantly what suggestions does everyone have so that my next terrain can even be better!

  1. It's indeed an excellent start for your terrain collection. Mounting your terrain pieces on bases like this one is a great choice, both for gaming and modeling. Your selection of colors all look really good, too. Very well done!

  2. Thank you. I'm working on a Imperial Bastion and made some sprue walls which I'll post up sometime soon.
